The story behind La Mirada Angelo (LMA)

This one began as a hedge in a La Mirada front yard that had been standing roughly thirty-five years before anyone in the hobby knew it existed. When the homeowner's husband, Angelo, passed away, the plant was renamed in his memory; before that it simply went around as the La Mirada bridgesii. She will happily tell you she thinks it is an ugly thing, while every visitor who walks past tells her the opposite, which may be the most Southern California conversation possible. We handle its distribution, so cuttings trace back to that original stand rather than to a reseller's best guess.

On the plant, the tell is the top. Upper sections come in largely spineless, with notched, slightly scalloped areoles marching up the ribs. Lower down, where spines do form, they start out yellow and bleach toward white as they age in the sun. A yard plant that old was never coddled, and ours are not either: hard-grown outdoors, so healed sun stress and old bug bites read as character on the stem instead of as damage. Take a cutting of this one and you are propagating a thirty-five-year-old survivor, not a nursery-forced clone that has never seen a bad winter.
